JAW Massage
Jaw pain or temporo-mandibular (TMJ) pain is referred to as Temporal Mandibular Dysfunction (TMD)
The most common type of jaw pain comes from the TMJ and surrounding muscle dysfunctions.
Causes of TMJ dysfunction
Several muscles control your jaw; larger muscles provide power for biting and chewing, while smaller muscles allow finer movement and control for speaking. When these muscles become overactive or work out-of-sync, they can cause pain, clicking, and catching of the jaw.
Grinding of the teeth (also called ‘bruxism’) is another common contributor to jaw pain; visits to the dentist can also cause problems from having to hold your mouth open for a long period or procedures such as fillings, which can slightly change your bite.
Injuries and stress can also contribute to changes in the TMJ muscle and joint function leading to pain and discomfort.
What are the symptoms of TMJ dysfunction?
- Pain in the jaw, one or both sides
- Pain in the neck
- Headaches
- Clicking in the jaw when opening and closing or eating
- Reports from the dentist of abnormal tooth wear
What does treatment for TMJ dysfunction involve?
Don’t be discouraged by long-standing jaw pain one of the most effective ways to rapidly reduce TMJ pain is jaw massage including intra-oral massage.
What is TMJ massage?
TMJ massage also called intra-oral massage or jaw massage – is a remedial massage technique used to reduce overactive muscles. Jaw massage involves the practitioner wearing latex gloves inserting fingers into the oral cavity and trigger-pointing various muscles in the mouth to improve movement, decrease pain and reduce clicking.
In addition to working on the jaw itself, we first work the outside of the jaw muscles and into the neck, as the jaw and neck are intrinsically linked.
Sessions are by appointment only
