Clinical Pilates Gold Coast | Private Pilates & Rehabilitation
Therapy through movement
Clinical Pilates is more than exercise. It is a personalised approach to improving strength, movement, balance, control and confidence in your body.
At Bodywork Evolution on the Gold Coast, Clinical Pilates is tailored to your individual body, movement patterns, current ability and goals. Whether you are recovering from an injury, managing persistent pain, returning to exercise, or simply want to improve your strength and mobility, each session is adapted to you.
I like to think of Clinical Pilates as “therapy through movement.”
Rather than simply following a set routine, you are guided through carefully selected exercises that help you develop better movement control, strength, flexibility, balance and body awareness.
What is Clinical Pilates?
Clinical Pilates combines the principles of Pilates with an understanding of movement, posture, strength, and rehabilitation.
Unlike a general Pilates class, where everyone follows the same program, Clinical Pilates allows exercises to be modified around your individual needs.
Your session may include:
- Pilates Reformer exercises
- Mat-based Pilates
- Pilates Chair and Cadillac exercises
- Small Pilates equipment
- Resistance springs and pulleys
- Balance and stability exercises
- Core and pelvic stability exercises
- Mobility and flexibility exercises
- Functional movement exercises
The equipment provides adjustable support and resistance, allowing exercises to be progressed or modified according to your strength, mobility and stage of recovery.
Why use Pilates equipment?
Pilates equipment such as the Reformer, Cadillac and Chair can make exercises more accessible by providing support, assistance or resistance.
The springs can be adjusted to make a movement easier while you learn control, or progressively more challenging as your strength improves.
This makes Clinical Pilates particularly useful when you are returning to exercise after an injury or surgery, have reduced strength or mobility, or need a more personalised exercise program.
Mat Pilates is also an important part of the approach. Without the assistance of equipment, your body must provide its own stability and control against gravity. It is also great if you are keen to do some home exercises in between visits, as little to no equipment is needed.
At Bodywork Evolution, equipment-based Pilates and mat exercises can be combined to create a balanced and progressive program.
Clinical Pilates vs Regular Pilates
What is the difference?
A regular Pilates class is generally designed for a group, with participants following a common sequence of exercises, and while all Pilates exercises have a purpose and benefit, not all exercises are good for everyone and every condition.
Clinical Pilates is different because the exercises are selected and modified for you.
If you have pain, an injury, weakness, reduced mobility or a particular movement goal, exercises can be adapted to suit your current ability.
You are not expected to keep up with a group or perform an exercise simply because everyone else is doing it.
Instead, you are guided through movements at a pace that allows you to develop:
- Strength
- Core stability
- Balance
- Flexibility
- Mobility
- Coordination
- Postural awareness
- Breathing and movement control
- Confidence in movement
As your body adapts, exercises can be progressively changed to continue challenging you appropriately.
The aim is to help you develop movement strategies that can also be incorporated into everyday activities, exercise and sport.
How can Clinical Pilates help?
Clinical Pilates can be useful for people who want to improve their movement and physical capacity, as well as those returning to activity following injury or surgery.
Regular practice may help improve posture, muscle tone, balance, and joint health.
Although there is considerable controversy over whether posture matters, I believe that if changes in posture affect function, then it does matter.
Clinical Pilates may be particularly helpful for:
Back and neck pain
Developing strength, mobility and control around the spine can help you move more comfortably and confidently.
Clinical Pilates can focus on the muscles that support the spine while also addressing movement patterns that may contribute to stiffness or discomfort.
Hip and pelvic problems
The hip and pelvis play an important role in walking, standing, bending and everyday movement.
Exercises can be adapted to improve hip strength, mobility, balance and control.
Joint problems and stiffness
Movement is important for maintaining strength and mobility around the joints.
Clinical Pilates provides controlled, progressive exercise that can be adapted for people experiencing joint stiffness or reduced movement.
Balance and falls prevention
Balance, strength and flexibility can change as we age.
Clinical Pilates can incorporate exercises designed to improve strength, stability, coordination and balance, helping you maintain confidence in everyday movement.
Osteopenia and osteoporosis
Exercise that appropriately loads the body can be an important part of maintaining bone and muscle health.
Clinical Pilates programs can be adapted around your individual needs, with attention to positioning, strength and safe movement.
Injury rehabilitation
Returning to exercise after an injury can be frustrating when you are unsure what you should or should not do.
Clinical Pilates provides a structured way to gradually rebuild strength, movement and confidence as you return to your normal activities.
Post-surgery rehabilitation
After surgery, strength and movement may be reduced.
A personalised Pilates program can help progressively rebuild movement and strength as part of your recovery.
Pelvic floor and core support
Clinical Pilates can incorporate exercises that develop core control, breathing, pelvic stability and whole-body movement rather than simply focusing on repeatedly tightening the abdominal muscles.
Stress and relaxation
Pilates requires concentration and awareness of how your body moves and breathes. This mind-body approach can also provide an opportunity to slow down, focus and relax.
Pilates for Strength, Mobility and Healthy Ageing
You do not have to be young, flexible or already fit to start Clinical Pilates.
The exercises can be adapted for different ages, abilities and fitness levels.
Clinical Pilates can be particularly valuable as we get older because maintaining muscle strength, joint mobility, balance and confidence in movement becomes increasingly important.
Rather than stopping activity because something feels difficult, the aim is to find an appropriate starting point and gradually build from there.
Your body is adaptable. Give it the right movement, at the right level, and it can continue to develop strength and capacity.
Private Clinical Pilates Sessions
One-to-one Pilates tailored to you
Private Clinical Pilates sessions provide the highest level of individual attention.
Your session can be designed around your:
- Current strength and mobility
- Injury or rehabilitation needs
- Pain or movement limitations
- Exercise experience
- Goals
- Confidence and ability
This can be particularly useful if you are new to Pilates, returning after an injury or surgery, or unsure how to use Pilates equipment.
Rather than trying to fit your body into a standard class, the exercises are adapted to fit you.
Sessions are by appointment only.
Semi-Private Clinical Pilates
If you prefer exercising with someone you know, semi-private Pilates can provide a great balance between individual attention and the motivation of working with another person.
You can train with a friend or partner while exercises are still adapted to your individual abilities and goals.
Working together can also make challenging exercises more enjoyable and provide extra motivation as you progress.
